For most, our vehicles are the second biggest purchase we make in life next to our homes. We do a lot to protect our homes from theft. But very little for our vehicles. Vehicle theft in Canada is growing in numbers due to many factors, one being the ease of which our convenient keyless entry systems can be hacked. A feature that has become standard practice in newer vehicles.
Faraday pouches are a simple and cost-effective way we can help reduce the chances of your car being stolen; Let us explain:
Modern convenience features in vehicles have been rapidly developing, and one of the more commonplace features is keyless entry.
Keyless entry allows you to keep your car key in your pocket or bag, with the car sensing the key’s proximity to the car and unlocking it as you approach. More moderately, keyless entry systems will also let you start the car with a button without having to use the key once it detects you are inside the vehicle.
This is wildly convenient and has become commonplace. Unfortunately on the flip-side it can also make a car more vulnerable to being stolen. This is where something like a Faraday bag or pouch can help address.
What is a Faraday Pouch?
A Faraday bag, pouch or box is essentially a small Faraday cage, named after its inventor, Michael Faraday.
Faraday technology blocks electromagnetic fields, such as those emitted by keyless entry systems.
How does Keyless theft occur?
Keyless entry systems can be vulnerable to keyless theft, also known as “relay theft”.
Car keys with a keyless function constantly transmit a signal that the car recognizes as you approach it; when the car recognizes the key is close (within a couple of feet), it unlocks itself.
The problem is, that thieves know this. An electronic tool that can pick up the signal from a key fob if it is placed near a door, window or exterior wall in your home.
This then amplifies and repeats the key’s signal, which is picked up by a second thief standing close to the car with a second electronic device. This tricks the vehicle into thinking the key is close, at which point the vehicle can be unlocked, started, and driven away.
How does a Faraday bag work?
The signals sent by keyless entry systems work by sending out electrons. A Faraday pouch is effectively a metal mesh inside a fabric or leather bag, and the layers of metal absorb the electrons being sent out by the key, stopping or greatly reducing their emission, and thus giving no signal to clone.
Is a Faraday Pouch expensive?
No. Faraday pouches are relatively simple and can be purchased for $20 or less. AT Beattie Dodge Jeep, they are included with the sale of any vehicle with a keyless entry system.
Put your keys away in your Faraday pouch when you’re home at night or traveling and you can be sure your precious vehicle will be parked where you left it!
